Because German people pride themselves on the quality of their baked goods, breadmaking can oftentimes be more than just a fun hobby--even a lucrative career path!
This week I went to a nearby flea market to look for some new things for my room. While I was there, I heard a popular German song from the 1980s. It's called 99 Luftballons and sung by a female singer named Nena. 99 Luftballons was originally an anti-war song writtin in 1983 in response to rising tensions between East and West Germany during the Cold War. Originally written in German, the song later gained international recognition, and is also popular in the English version: "99 Red Balloons."
This week has been pretty relaxed, since it is the first week of university and I have fall break at the school I'm working at. However, I would say it's been most fun going to my university classes and getting to know some of the other students in my program.
On Monday after our first course was finished, I went to grab coffee with some of my classmates and got to know a bit more about their backgrounds. It was actually super interesting, because everyone came from a different part of the world! For example, I made a new friend, Brjan, who comes from Montenegro. He introduced me to a girl from Finland, who introduced me to her friend from Palestine. It was like making a big chain of connections!
