Students' Lives

Introduction:

Many aspects of life growing up in Singapore might seem familiar to kids from the U.S. While there are certainly differences between here and there, growing up halfway across the world doesn't seem as different as one might expect.

What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?:

Lunch and dinner typically vary in Singapore, as there are usually many different options depending on the kind of food (Indian vs. Japanese vs. Korean, for example). A meal may be anything from chicken and rice to beef soup! Breakfast in Singapore, however, is very different from breakfast in the U.S. Singaporeans usually enjoy eggs, toast and coffee, which may sound very ordinary--but it's prepared very differently. The eggs are usually runny or soft cooked and the toast is served with kaya, a mix of coconut milk, sugar, eggs and butter.

What is your house like?:

Being a student in Singapore is very much like living in most bigger cities. Many Singaporeans live in HPD (Housing and Development Boarding) apartments because they are very nice and affordable. These are a form of public housing provided in part by the government.

What chores do you have at home?:

Most university students live on their own or with a roommate, so they are responsible for maintaining their living space, doing their laundry and preparing food.
