Bonsais of Barcelona: More than just Baby Trees!

Introduction:

Last Friday night, we experienced one of Barcelona’s famous fall thunderstorms. The heavy downpour reminded me of winters in Tualatin, where we also receive a lot of rainfall! However, when I woke up on Saturday morning, I saw that the clouds had finally cleared. Everything in the city was so fresh from all the rain!

I decided that it would be the perfect day to explore a little bit of the nature in Barcelona. So, I made my way to Montjuïc, one of the mountains of the city, to pay a visit to the jardín botánico (botanical garden) of Barcelona.

There, I discovered a very special exhibit of bonsai trees. Bonsai trees are essentially little trees. They are planted in small pots, so they never grow to be more than a few feet tall! My favorite bonsai was a tree that is found often in the Mediterranean region where Barcelona is located. This tree is called a figuera, or fig tree!

What does this creature or plant look like?:

The figuera shown here is a common tree in the Mediterranean region. In fact, the name of this species, or type, is called the Common Fig Tree! Fig trees usually have white bark and large leaves in the shape of a hand. Can you see the five fingers on the leaves of the fig tree?

How did I feel when I saw it?:

First of all, I was simply overjoyed by the bonsai garden in general.
