What main languages are spoken here?:

Switzerland is located in the middle of many neigboring countries, which influence its culture and histrory. It has four official languages, which reflect its cultural diversity:

  1. German – The most widely spoken language, used in central and eastern parts of the country, like Zurich and Bern.
  2. French – Spoken in western Switzerland, including Geneva canton, where I am living, in the Gland municipality.
  3. Italian – Used in southern Switzerland, especially in the canton of Ticino.
  4. Romansh – A minority language spoken in some parts of the canton of Graubünden in eastern Switzerland, an indigenous language of the Raetian people.

As I live in the canton of Geneva, I mainly use French and English interchangeably here, and I’ve found that many Swiss people know at least one or two additional languages. This makes it easy to communicate, but sometimes it’s hard because I want to integrate into the culture, but the comfort of using English is more convenient. Thus, I make an effort to practice French with my host mom, order food, and interact with people on trains. It’s fascinating to see how the language changes as you travel across different regions of the country!
