COAR Kids - Student Life at Peru's High-Performance Boarding Schools

“Hola” means hello in Spanish.

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

For guys, some common names are André, Pepe, Pedro, Juan, Mateo, and Carlos. For girls, a common name is Luana.

What subjects do you study in school, and which one is your favorite?:

I am studying in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program. IB-specific subjects that I study in the COAR include Creativity, Action, and Service (community service), Theory of Knowledge, and Monograph, in which students develop an extended essay of 4,000 words over two years. Both in the COAR and throughout Peru, the remaining subjects are Citizenship, Civic and Personal Development (DPCC), mathematics, English, history, language arts, chemistry, physics, and biology, and physical education. The COAR also offers electives and workshops in technology, visual arts, business management, and sports science.

My favorite subjects are biology, math, and English.

What is your homework like?:

The COAR calls homework “extension activities” or “extracurricular activities.” Homework takes anywhere from one and a half to three hours a day to complete, but it is not torturous. Everyone in the COAR does their homework, so it feels natural and comfortable when everyone else is doing the same. Anyways, I prefer to research a topic I like or complete homework rather than watch a movie, for example.
