There are many different types of food to try in India. One of the best times to explore new foods is during one of the many Indian festivals that happen throughout the year. Onam is a festival that originated in the Indian state of Kerala. Today, the tradition has spread to many other parts of India like the nearby state of Karnataka where I am staying.
During the festival of Onam, heaping piles of food are served on large banana leaves. The complete feast is called Sadhya, but it actually consists of many different vegetarian dishes that have been prepared separately. Sadhya usually contains rice and a wide variety of different curries as the main part of the meal, but it also includes other foods on the side like upperi (banana chips), sambhar (a soupy dish with lots of onions and tomatoes), and pappadam (a thin, crispy snack).
Take a look at all the pictures and this video to see what Sadhya looks like and how it is served! https://youtu.be/9gCaBKryH_U
