Waste Management in India

Is this need being met? How?:

City officials in Bengaluru are planning to open up new sanitary landfills to address the problems surrounding the collection of waste. In the meantime, some private organizations are stepping in to fill the gap. For example, my university is doing an incredible job at being a "zero waste" campus.

On my campus, they have a waste management program called Parivarthana. At Parivarthana, they separate different kinds of trash into different piles and find ways to recycle it where possible. For example, food waste is turned into fertilizer which the university uses to help grow trees on campus. They also have a method for recycling paper items and turning them into useful items like folders which they sell to students on campus.

Unfortunately, even with organizations like my university doing their part, Bengaluru still has a long way to go when it comes to effective waste management. The solution to this problem will require a large community effort and lots of organization.

What unique challenges does your community face? How can you help to make a difference in tackling these issues?
