As a relatively new megacity, Bengaluru's population has exploded in the last few years. The increasing demands on the environment have changed the landscape of the city. The high population means more buildings and fewer trees, more trash on the streets, higher levels of traffic, and increased levels of pollution in the water and air.
One of my professors showed us a map in class that compared the number of trees in the city since 1973 up until today. The first map was almost completely green, representing lots and lots of trees. Over time, the map became almost completely red, representing fewer and fewer trees. Take a look for yourselves!
People who live in Bengaluru have told me that the temperature here has increased noticeably as a result of the changing environment. In order to adapt, many of them now use air conditioners. People did not need to do this before because of Bengaluru's cool weather, but now many find it necessary due to the increasing temperature of the city. This unfortunately comes with a host of other problems, since air conditioners contribute to the higher pollution levels over time.
How does your environment affect the way that you live? How is your community addressing with new environmental challenges?
