There are nonprofits across Mauritius such as Save Our Strays, the Humane Society, PAWS and countless others. Each strives to increase sterilization and provide shelters to strays, but there are still an estimated 200,000-300,000 stray dogs in Mauritius.
As I was traveling across Mauritius, I saw stray animals on every other street. The locals have become accustomed to it, so some animals are even allowed to roam the hotel lobbies.
There are not enough programs to sterilize the animals, so they keep reproducing beyond what the shelters can control. There is also a lack of educational programs for pet owners.
There are over a dozen animal welfare programs aimed to find the animals homes and to reduce reproduction. Up until 2013, the government allowed for dogs to be gathered from the street and euthanized by the masses. Because of recent animal rights campaigns, euthanizing local dogs is no longer allowed, but undercover operations suspect that it is still happening, unfortunately.
