Navigating the Railway System in Japan

Introduction:

Train stations in Japan are used for bullet trains, trains and subways. It is a much cheaper option to travel by train than by plane. I purchased a rail pass for $300 that allowed me to take an unlimited number of trains and subways throughout select cities in Japan. It covered travel to Tokyo, Kobe and Hiroshima. There are countless options available depending on what a traveler or resident may need.

How do people get around?:

Japan has rail passes that allow users to pay a one-time fee to use trains and subways for unlimited trips. The convenience and speed of this option make it the most popular way to travel. Personal cars, taxis and bikes are also popular modes of transportation.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

At the beginning of my stay in Japan, it was intimidating to travel at the train stations because of how busy and crowded it was. It was difficult to understand the options of how to get place to place, but we got the hang of it after a few days. I would love to use more trains and subways to travel here in the United States because it would be cheaper, more efficient and better for the environment. It would be more practical if our U.S. public transportation network was more widespread. Also, it is typically quicker than dealing with the hassles of airports!
