Religion Influences the Environment

Israel, through its occupation, has used the West Bank as a dumping ground for trash and sewage. This has severely affected the biodiversity of much of the area because the toxins in the waste and sewage detrimentally impact the ability of certain plants and animals to thrive. As Israel continues to use Palestine as a dumping ground, the environment will continue to be negatively affected.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

Israel, as a country, is extremely innovative and has made a lot of advancements in water and agriculture technology, which has enabled people to live and thrive here and in Palestine. Within Palestine, ancient techniques of agricultural terracing are used to conserve water, while also making the most of the hill and mountain-filled landscape. For Israel, the Mediterranean Sea provides food through fish and water through desalination plants. For Palestine, though water sources are contested, underground aquifers and the northern Sea of Galilee provide water for people and agriculture. Though much of the land is desert, it is still fertile and provides a steady supply of fresh produce year round.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

Israel and the West Bank are incredibly dry lands. There is a terrible lack of accessible and reliable streams of fresh water for drinking, sewage, agriculture and more. Alongside this, much of the land is desert, which when it rains often results in flash floods that can be severly detrimental. Flooding can cause deaths due to drowning. Agriculture and fresh water sources can easily be destroyed or contaminated. It can take a while to recuperate from this destruction.
