Turtle Time

The turtle had been walking across the stone driveway, so when it pulled its head into its shell, it made a clicking noise that startled me. I was lucky to be able to take a few photos to show you before it hid.

Where does it live?:

There are three turtles that live in my backyard. Luckily there is a lot of green space and many trees for the turtles to hide in. There is a lot of grass for them to wander through and look for food to eat! I have seen turtles eating bananas and also small insects. I was very suprised to see the turtle eating the banana, since I did not realize they would like something so sweet. These turtles have a varied diet, which means that they can survive in many different regions of the country. I have seen the turtles hiding under trees, between bushes, and also just sitting in the middle of the grass! I think that these are very active turtles. They really do seem to move around the yard quite frequently.

How does it use its environment to survive?:

Since these turtles live on the ground, they need to search for water sources to stay cool. Often, I have seen the turtles walk around searching for small puddles or little ponds to stick their head in. One day, when I was walking outside of my house, I found one of the turtles putting its head in the sprinkler! It was such a funny scene. It slowly put its head in and out of the sprinkler. I got a video to show you as well. I had to be careful, because when he took his head out of the water, I suddenly got sprayed with water as well. I almost wanted to join the turtle in the sprinkler because it was such a hot and humid day!
