Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!

Introduction:

Given how many people live and visit Florence, the amount of waste being produced every day is high. However, they have an efficient system here to keep the space nice and clean. Along with that, many Italians are big recyclers, so this helps a lot when it comes to saving the environment!

What community need did I learn about?:

Coming to Italy, I learned the importance of reducing my waste production, reusing my resources, and recycling whatever I can. This is because the trash collection is efficient and the recycling system here is everywhere! When I take away my trash, I have to make sure I separate all organic waste, non-recyclable waste and recyclables. Even in food places around the city, the trash cans are separated so we can reduce the amount of trash that goes to landfills. The main trashcans are also in the city. People here don't pick up your trash for you, so if you have a big bag of trash, you have to carry it to the main trash cans yourself. This might help people produce less trash because it is a hassle to carry a big bag of trash to the main dumpsters to throw away.

Why does the community have this need?:

Florence has this need because there are a lot of people who live and visit here. For example, an average of 16 million people visit per year. That is a lot of people and a lot of trash being produced.
