Adapting and Adjusting!

Starting from the food they eat and the lifestyle of the people here, I think it is definitely a culture shock. There isn't a right or wrong way of doing things, but it is more so a way of life I wasn't used to. For example, it is really common here for people to walk from place to place or to use public transportation. However, back in California, everyone drives a car to get from place to place. I think understanding and accepting the differences are some challenges people face when living in a new environment.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

It is amazing how far you can go if you set your mind to it. Adapting to my new enviornment was not easy at first, but here are some of my tips I got from people who have been adapting to this new enviroment. It might help anyone who might be thinking about studying abroad (which I highly recommend)!

  1. Be open minded! It is easy to compare the things you have back home to what you might or might not have now in your new environment, but change is sometimes good.
  2. Be willing to learn! There is so much to see and explore in a new place, so be curious and see everything your environment has to offer.
  3. Try to learn the language! For me, learning Italian was probably one of the most helpful things when it came to adapting to my new environment.

There are so many ways one can adapt to their environment as everyone is different. Adapting isn't easy but I hope each one of you takes the chance to study abroad when you get the opportunity! Challenge yourself to step outside your comfort zone. I promise you it will be okay! :)
