The Tradition of Christmas Markets

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Slovakia, similar to much of Central Europe, has strong Catholic roots. The Christmas Markets usually take place during Advent, the religious celebration leading up to Christmas. At the markets, a lot of Christian religious items, such as manger scenes and crosses, can be purchased. The real life manger scene also connects with this Christian tradition. It is a way to spend time with friends, purchase Christmas gifts and add some cheer to the Christmas season.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

The markets are connected to the environment in a few different ways. It is said that the markets started around the year 1300 as a way for people to buy enough food for winter before it got too cold. Over the years it became what it is today. The best Christmas market atmosphere is when it is snowing. The hot beverages served are meant to warm people up in the cold. Christmas markets are now also looking at ways to save the environment. Instead of using a lot of plastic ware to serve food and drinks, people have to rent mugs. They pay $5 for the mug when they buy a drink. When they finish, they can return the mug and get the money back. Wooden silverware is also used instead of plastic.
