Getting around Košice

Introduction:

Public transportation is always something that I've wanted to use more, and now I'm getting my chance. In Košice I rely on public transportation to get where I need and want to go. I like it because it allows me a lot of freedom. I no longer need a ride from someone to get somewhere.

How do people get around?:

Here, most people get around by car and public transit. My host family is unique in that they own two cars. Most families own only one. We live a little bit outside of the city. They cannot rely on public transit for their jobs because they sometimes work second or third shifts. My host sister and I, like many others, take public transit to get where we need to go. Public transit consists of buses, trolleys and trams.

When I decide to leave Košice, I take an inter-city bus, train, or plane. Most people use trains to travel longer distances across Slovakia. The ticket prices are reasonable, so many people choose train or bus over car. Students can even ride the trains for free!

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

I was so excited to take public transportation. In Milwaukee, I would take the bus sometimes because students could ride for free. However, once I got a car during my last year of school, I started to rely on that. I do not think that there are good public transit options in most of the United States.
